Award-winning Afrobeat star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has once again made headlines following South African singer Tyla’s speech at the recently-concluded MTV Video Music Award show.
Tyla, whose real name is Tyla Laura Seethal, took home the Best Afrobeats award for her viral hit song ‘Water’ at the show which took place on Wednesday, September 11 at New York’s USB arena.
She won the award ahead of Ayra Starr ft. Giveon (Last Heartbreak Song), Burna Boy (City Boys), Chris Brown ft. Davido & Lojay (Sensational), Tems (Love Me JeJe), USHER & Pheelz (Ruin).
Then, she climbed on stage to give her victory speech and it sparked widespread reactions among social media users. Firstly, Tyla admitted that she is not an Afrobeats singer but an Amapiano star.
The 22-year-old musician went ahead to give special recognition for Nigerian singers who were in the same category with her and beyond.
It was noticeable that Tyla omitted Davido’s name as she gave shout out to Wizkid, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Tems, Lojay and Rema.
A part of her speech reads, “I represent my culture and I just want to give shout out to Afrobeats stars in the same category with me, Shout out Tems, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Lojay and all of us”.
Her speech caused buzz online as social media users especially 30BG fans blew hot at Tyla. Many blasted her for not giving regards to Davido.
This isn’t the first time there’s been tension between Davido and Tyla. Back in February, during the 66th Grammy Awards, Davido congratulated Tyla, but the South African singer did not acknowledge his gesture.
